Survival Guide (currency, outlets, emergencies)

The local currency is the Czech Crown (CZK), with the official exchange rate around 25 to 26 CZK per 1 EUR and 22 to 23 CZK per 1 USD.

Generally, only CZK is accepted at shops, restaurants, taxi drivers, etc. It is usually possible to pay by the most frequent credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard). Contactless payment is a standard option in most places. ATMs are relatively frequent in the city centre and operate non-stop.

When travelling to Brno with electronic devices purchased in the UK or overseas, it is important to remember that the standard outlet in Czechia is the French type E (a twin-pin plug), Europlug or CEE 7/17 standard. Please make sure you have a corresponding outlet converter to avoid any inconvenience.

Brno is generally regarded as a safe city. However, during the pre-Christmas period, there is a relative increase in pickpockets around the locations of Christmas markets.

The universal phone number for any emergency is 112. Operators speak English.

Getting to Brno

While Brno has an international airport, there are only a limited number of connections available. It is generally more convenient to fly to Prague (Vaclav Havel Airport Prague; IATA: PRG) or Vienna (Vienna Airport, IATA: VIE) and subsequently travel to Brno.

From Vienna Airport to Brno:

Direct bus lines operate between the Vienna Airport and Brno by RegioJet, Flixbus and Gepard Express. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. When booked in advance, the price is around 400 CZK (approx. 16 EUR). Please check cancellation policies to plan accordingly (e.g., RegioJet allows a refund of ticket price until 15 minutes before departure, which is convenient should your plane get delayed).

There are no direct train lines between Vienna Airport and Brno. A direct train operated by ÖBB connects the Vienna Airport and Vienna Main Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof). RegioJet and Czech Railways operate a subsequent connection from there to Brno. The trip from Vienna Airport to Vienna Main Station takes approximately 20 minutes, and the journey from Vienna Main Station to Brno takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

From Prague Airport to Brno:

The direct bus line between Prague Airport and Brno is operated by Gepard Express. The journey takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. When booked in advance, the price is around 450 CZK (approx. 18 EUR).

Prague Airport is connected to Prague City Center by several bus lines.

Czech Railways operates a direct train connection from Prague City Center to Brno, departing approximately every 45 minutes. The journey is around 2 hours and 40 minutes (RJ, EC, IC trains; please be aware that R trains take up to an hour more, and avoid them). Additionally, the train line operated by RegioJet leaves every 2 hours, reaching Brno in approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. When booked in advance, the price is around 400 CZK (approx. 16 EUR). All trains leave from the Main Train Station (Hlavní nádraží), which is located on Metro C (red line) and can also be reached by some of the bus lines.

Direct bus service connects Prague City Center and Brno, departing approximately every 30 minutes. The connection is provided by RegioJet, Flixbus, as well as other operators. When booked in advance, the price is around 300 CZK (approx. 12 EUR). All buses leave from the Florenc Bus Station (Florenc), which is located on Metro B/C (yellow/red line), and could also be reached by some of the bus lines.

The most convenient way of obtaining information about public transportation in Prague, as well as train and bus connections to Brno, is IDOS.

From Brno Airport to Brno:

If you fly to Brno Airport, bus line E76 provides a direct connection to Brno. It departs approximately every 30 to 60 minutes (depending on the daytime) and takes approximately 20 minutes to reach Brno City Center (Hlavní nádraží). Use IDOS to obtain further information and to plan your trip.
